Scene 1 · Intermediate
Once upon a time, there lived a king and queen. They had no children, although they wanted a child very much. Every day they sighed: “Oh, if only we had a child!”
One day, the queen was bathing when a frog crawled out of the water onto the bank.
“Your wish will come true,” it said to the queen. “Before a year has passed, you will have a daughter.”
