Scene 1 · Intermediate

A wish for a child

English translation

Once there was a woman who longed to have a little child, but her wish did not come true. At last she visited a fairy and asked her for help.

English translation

“I would love to have a little child. Can you tell me where I can find one?” “That’s easy,” replied the fairy. “Take this grain of barley. It isn’t like the ordinary barley that grows in the fields and that chickens eat. Plant it in a flowerpot and you’ll see what happens.”

English translation

The woman thanked her and gave her twelve shillings, the price of the special grain.
