Den enbente tinnsoldaten
The one-legged tin soldier
English translation
Once upon a time there were twenty-five tin soldiers. They were all brothers, because they had been made from the same old tin spoon. They stood in red and blue uniforms with their guns on their shoulders and their eyes fixed straight ahead.
English translation
“Tin soldiers!” cried a little boy as the lid was lifted off the box. Those were the first words the soldiers heard in this world.
English translation
The boy clapped his hands in delight and began lining up the soldiers he had been given for his birthday. They all looked exactly alike except for one, who had only one leg. When it was his turn to be made, last of all, there wasn’t enough molten tin left for the other leg. Even so, he stood just as steadily as his brothers.
