Scene 1 · Intermediate

A féllábú ólomkatona

The one-legged tin soldier

Hungarian

Volt egyszer huszonöt ólomkatona. Mind ugyanabból a régi ónkanálból készültek, ezért testvérek voltak. Piros-kék egyenruhájukban egyenesen előrenéztek, és a vállukon tartották a puskájukat.

English translation

Once upon a time there were twenty-five tin soldiers. They were all made from the same old tin spoon, so they were brothers. In their red-and-blue uniforms, they stood straight, looking ahead, with their rifles resting on their shoulders.

English translation

“Tin soldiers!” a little boy cried out happily as their box was opened. It was the first thing they had ever heard.

Hungarian

A kisfiú születésnapjára kapta őket.

English translation

The boy had received them for his birthday. Happily, he clapped his hands, then went over to the table to line up the soldiers. They were all alike, except for one: the last one had only one leg. By the time he was being made, there wasn’t enough melted tin left to make his other leg. Even so, he stood so firmly on his one leg that it made him truly special.
