Scene 1 · Intermediate

Jednonogi cynowy żołnierzyk

The one-legged tin soldier

Polish

Pewnego razu z jednej starej cynowej łyżki odlano dwudziestu pięciu żołnierzy. Ponieważ powstali z tej samej łyżki, wszyscy byli braćmi. Mieli wspaniałe czerwono-niebieskie mundury, trzymali karabiny na ramieniu i patrzyli prosto przed siebie.

English translation

Once, twenty-five soldiers were cast from a single old tin spoon. Because they came from the same spoon, they were all brothers. They wore splendid red-and-blue uniforms, held rifles on their shoulders, and looked straight ahead.

Polish

– Cynowe żołnierzyki!

English translation

“Tin soldiers!”

English translation

Those were the first words they heard when the lid of their box was lifted. A little boy said them, clapping with delight. He had received the soldiers for his birthday and at once began arranging them on the table.

Polish

Właśnie to odróżniało go od wszystkich braci.

English translation

They all looked alike, with one exception: the last little soldier had only one leg. By the time it was his turn to be cast, there was no molten tin left to finish him. Even so, he was made so that he could stand firmly on his one leg. That was what made him different from all his brothers.
