Den etbenede tinsoldat

The one-legged tin soldier

English translation

Once upon a time there were twenty-five tin soldiers. They were all brothers because they had been cast from the same old tin spoon. In their fine red and blue uniforms, they looked straight ahead with their rifles over their shoulders. “Tin soldiers!” was the first thing they heard when the lid was lifted off the box. A little boy had shouted it, clapping his hands with delight.

English translation

He had received them as a birthday gift and immediately began lining them up on the table.

English translation

All the soldiers looked alike except for one who had only one leg. He had been cast last, and by then there wasn’t enough molten tin left for another leg. Even so, he stood just as firmly as the others, and that was exactly what made him so remarkable.
