Il soldatino con una gamba sola
The one-legged tin soldier
English translation
Once upon a time there were twenty-five tin soldiers. They were all brothers, because they had been made from the same old tin spoon. They carried their weapons over their shoulders and looked straight ahead in their splendid red and blue uniforms.
English translation
The first words they heard were “Tin soldiers!” They were spoken by a boy, who clapped his hands with joy as soon as their box was opened. He had received them for his birthday and immediately began arranging them on the table.
English translation
The soldiers were all alike, except for one, who had only one leg. He had been made last, when there wasn’t enough melted tin left to finish him. Even so, he could stand firmly on that one leg: that was what made him special.
