Soldățelul de cositor cu un singur picior

The one-legged tin soldier

English translation

Once upon a time there were twenty-five tin soldiers. They were all brothers, because they had been made from the same old spoon, melted down to shape them. They wore handsome red and blue uniforms, carried their rifles on their shoulders, and looked straight ahead.

English translation

When someone lifted the lid of their box, a little boy clapped his hands, delighted: “Tin soldiers!”

English translation

These were the first words they had ever heard. The boy had received them for his birthday, and now he stood beside the table, ready to set them upright.

English translation

All the soldiers looked exactly alike, with one exception: one had only one leg. He had been made last, when there was not enough melted tin left to finish him. Even so, he stood firmly on his only leg, and it was precisely this difference that made him stand out.
