Scene 1 · Intermediate
Den enbente tennsoldaten
The one-legged tin soldier
English translation
Once upon a time there were twenty-five tin soldiers. They were all brothers, because they had been cast from the same old tin spoon. In their red and blue uniforms, they looked straight ahead with their rifles on their shoulders.
English translation
“Tin soldiers!” cried a little boy when the lid was lifted off the box. Those were the first words the soldiers had ever heard. The boy had received them as a birthday present and clapped his hands with delight before standing them up on the table. They all looked exactly alike, except for the one who had been cast last.
English translation
When his turn came, there was not enough melted tin to cast both his legs. Even so, he stood as steadily as his brothers, and that was just what made him so unusual.
