Scene 1 · Intermediate

O soldadinho de uma perna só

The one-legged tin soldier

English translation

Once upon a time, there were twenty-five little tin soldiers. They were all brothers, because they had been made from a single old spoon that had been melted down to make the toys. They wore handsome red and blue uniforms, carried their weapons on their shoulders, and always looked straight ahead.

English translation

The first words they heard were a cry of joy: “Tin soldiers!”

English translation

A little boy clapped his hands as the box was opened. It was his birthday, and he had just received the soldiers as a gift. Beside the table, he began setting them upright.

English translation

They were all alike, with one exception: the last soldier had only one leg. When it was his turn to be made, there wasn’t enough tin left to make both legs. Even so, he stood so firmly on his one leg that he stood out among his brothers.
