Jakub, nazywany też Izraelem, mieszkał w ziemi Kanaan, gdzie wcześniej żył jego ojciec. Jego syn Józef miał siedemnaście lat. Pasł stado z braćmi, między innymi z synami Bilhy i Zilpy, żon Jakuba. O złym postępowaniu braci opowiadał ojcu.
English translation
Jacob, also called Israel, lived in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived before him. His son Joseph was seventeen years old. He tended the flock with his brothers, including the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, Jacob’s wives. He told his father about his brothers’ bad behavior.

Jakub kochał Józefa bardziej niż pozostałe dzieci, ponieważ Józef urodził mu się na starość. Kazał uszyć dla niego tunikę w wielu kolorach. Bracia widzieli tę miłość. Tak bardzo nienawidzili Józefa, że nie umieli z nim przyjaźnie rozmawiać.
English translation
Jacob loved Joseph more than his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. He had a tunic made for him in many colors. His brothers saw how much Jacob loved him. They hated Joseph so much that they could not speak to him in a friendly way.
