Pewien człowiek miał osła, który przez długie lata wytrwale nosił do młyna worki ze zbożem. Z czasem jednak zwierzę zaczęło tracić siły i coraz trudniej przychodziła mu praca. Właściciel zastanawiał się więc, jak uniknąć dalszych kosztów jego karmienia.
English translation
A man had a donkey that had tirelessly carried sacks of grain to the mill for many years. Over time, however, the animal began to lose its strength, and its work became increasingly difficult. So the owner wondered how he could avoid the ongoing cost of feeding it.

Osioł wyczuł niebezpieczeństwo i uciekł. Ruszył drogą do Bremy, myśląc: „Tam z pewnością znajdzie się dla mnie miejsce wśród miejskich muzykantów”.
English translation
The donkey sensed danger and ran away. He set off along the road to Bremen, thinking, “Surely they’ll have a place for me among the town musicians there.”
