Był ostatni wieczór roku. Było bardzo zimno, padał śnieg i robiło się ciemno. Po ulicach chodziła mała, biedna dziewczynka. Nie miała nic na głowie, a jej stopy były bose.
It was the last evening of the year. It was very cold, snow was falling, and it was getting dark. A poor little girl was walking through the streets. She had nothing on her head, and her feet were bare.
Kiedy wychodziła z domu, miała duże pantofle, które wcześniej należały do jej matki. Zgubiła je jednak, gdy przebiegała przez ulicę przed dwoma szybkimi powozami. Jednego pantofla nie mogła znaleźć. Drugi zabrał chłopiec i uciekł. Powiedział, że kiedy będzie miał dzieci, zrobi z niego małe łóżeczko dla dziecka.
When she left home, she was wearing large slippers that had belonged to her mother. But she lost them as she ran across the street in front of two fast carriages. She couldn’t find one of the slippers. A boy took the other one and ran away. He said that when he had children, he would make it into a little bed for a child.
