Det var årets sista kväll. Det snöade mycket och det var kallt och nästan mörkt. En liten flicka gick genom gatorna utan mössa och utan skor. Hon hade sin mammas tofflor på sig när hon gick hemifrån. De var alldeles för stora.
English translation
It was the last evening of the year. Snow was falling heavily, and it was cold and almost dark. A little girl walked through the streets without a hat or shoes. She had been wearing her mother’s slippers when she left home. They were much too big for her.

Två vagnar kom snabbt längs gatan. Flickan sprang över gatan för att komma undan och tappade båda tofflorna. Hon kunde inte hitta den ena. En pojke tog den andra och sprang iväg.
English translation
Two carriages came quickly down the street. The girl ran across the street to get out of their way and lost both slippers. She could not find one of them. A boy took the other and ran away.
