Illustration for the scene “A barefoot girl in the snow”

Scene 1 · Beginner

O fetiță desculță în zăpadă

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

It was the last evening of the year. It was snowing heavily, it was very cold, and it was almost dark. A little girl was walking through the streets bareheaded and barefoot.

English translation

When she left home, she was wearing her mother’s slippers, but they were much too big for her. She lost them when she ran across the street to avoid being hit by two carriages coming very fast. She never found one of the slippers again. A boy took the other one and ran off with it.

English translation

The boy said he would be able to use the slipper as a cradle, a small bed for a child, when he had children of his own.
