Scene 1 · Beginner

A barefoot girl in the snow

English

It was the last evening of the year. Snow was falling, and the streets were very cold and almost dark. A poor little girl walked through them without a hat or shoes.

English

When she left home, she was wearing her mother's slippers. They were much too big for her. As she ran across the street to escape two fast carriages, she lost both slippers. She could not find one, and a boy took the other and ran away.

English

He said he could use it as a little bed for his children when he grew up.
