Scene 1 · Beginner

Uma menina descalça na neve

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

It was the last day of the year. It was almost dark, it was snowing heavily, and it was terribly cold. A poor girl walked through the streets, bareheaded and barefoot.

English translation

She had left home wearing her mother’s slippers, but they were much too big. As she crossed the street, she had to run to get out of the way of two carriages speeding by. She lost both slippers. She couldn’t find one, and a boy picked up the other and ran off.
