God spoke to Jonah, son of Amittai: “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Preach against its people, because I have learned of their wicked deeds.”

But Jonah decided to flee to Tarshish, far away from God. He went down to Joppa and found a ship that was about to sail to Tarshish. After paying the fare, Jonah went aboard to travel there with the sailors and hide from God.
