Scene 1 · Beginner
A soldier was walking along the main road. He was returning home after the war. He had a knapsack, a soldier’s bag, on his back, and a saber hung at his side.
An old, frightening witch was walking toward him. Her lower lip hung all the way down to her chest. The witch praised his saber and knapsack, then said: “You are a real soldier! I will help you get as much money as you want.”
The soldier thanked her. The witch pointed to a large tree beside the road. It was hollow inside, and there was an opening at the top.
“Climb the tree and go down through that opening,” she said. “I will tie a rope around you. When you call me, I will pull you back up.”
