Scene 1 · Intermediate

En and venter i sin rede

A duck waiting on her nest

English translation

It was summer in the countryside. The grain stood golden in the fields, the oats were still green, and the hay was stacked in the meadows. A stork walked about on its long red legs, speaking Egyptian, which it had learned from its mother. Around the fields and meadows lay vast woods with deep pools.

English translation

Beside an old farmhouse, burdock leaves grew all the way down to the river. The largest leaves stood so high that a small child could stand upright beneath them. In that warm, sheltered spot, a duck sat on her nest. She was getting tired of waiting for her eggs to hatch. It didn’t help that she hardly ever had visitors.

Danish

De andre ænder ville hellere svømme i floden end kravle op ad den glatte bred for at sludre med hende.

English translation

The other ducks would rather swim in the river than scramble up the slippery bank to chat with her.
