Scene 1 · Intermediate
A kacsa a fészkén várakozik
A duck waiting on her nest
English translation
It was a beautiful summer in the countryside. The grain was turning yellow, the oats were still green, and haystacks stood in rows in the meadows. The stork stepped along on its long red legs, clattering in Egyptian, just as its mother had taught it. Great forests surrounded the fields and meadows, with lakes hidden deep inside them. It was a joy to walk in such a place.

English translation
An old farmhouse stood in the sunshine, right beside a deep river. Giant burdock leaves grew between the house and the riverbank. A small child could have stood under the biggest ones without bending down. They grew so thickly that it felt as if you were in the middle of a forest.

English translation
In this sheltered nook, a duck sat on her nest, waiting for her little ones to hatch. She was tired of waiting: the eggs simply would not crack, and hardly anyone came to visit her. The other ducks would rather swim in the river than climb up the slippery bank and talk with her under a leaf.
