Scene 1 · Intermediate

Een eend wacht op haar nest

A duck waiting on her nest

English translation

It was summer in the countryside. Golden-yellow grain and green oats grew in the fields, and tall haystacks stood in the meadows. A stork walked around on its long red legs. It clattered in Egyptian, as its mother had taught it. Great forests with deep pools lay around the fields.

English translation

Close to a deep river, a beautiful old farmhouse stood in the sun. Between the house and the water grew burdock plants with such enormous leaves that a small child could stand upright beneath them. Under those leaves, it was as wild as in a thick forest.

English translation

In this sheltered spot, a duck sat on her nest. She was waiting for her ducklings to hatch, but it was taking a long time, and she was beginning to lose patience. She hardly had any visitors, either. The other ducks would rather swim in the river than climb up the slippery bank to talk to her.
