Scene 1 · Intermediate

En anka väntar i sitt bo

A duck waiting on her nest

English translation

It was a glorious summer in the countryside. The grain shone golden, the oats stood green, and hay lay in stacks in the meadows. The stork walked around on his long red legs, clattering away in Egyptian, a language he had learned from his mother. Around the fields were great forests with deep pools of water.

English translation

An old farmhouse stood in the sun beside a deep river. Between the house and the water grew burdocks with leaves so large that a small child could stand upright beneath them. Down among the leaves it was as wild as the middle of a forest.

English translation

Sheltered by the leaves, a duck sat on her nest. She was beginning to tire of sitting on her eggs, for her little ones were taking their time hatching, and she rarely had visitors. The other ducks preferred swimming in the river to climbing up the slippery bank to chat beneath a leaf.
