Scene 1 · Intermediate

En and venter i reiret sitt

A duck waiting on her nest

English translation

It was a beautiful summer day in the countryside. The grain was golden, the oats were green, and out in the meadows the hay was piled in large stacks. A stork walked about on his long red legs, clattering away in Egyptian, just as his mother had taught him. Around the fields and meadows lay vast forests with deep ponds among the trees.

English translation

An old farmhouse stood in the sun beside a deep river. From the house all the way down to the water’s edge grew burdock plants with leaves so big that a small child could stand upright beneath them. In there, where the growth was as thick as in the forest, a duck sat on her nest.

English translation

She had been waiting a long time for the eggs to hatch, and now she was starting to get bored. The other ducks preferred swimming in the river to climbing up the slippery bank to have a chat with her.
