Uma cegonha caminhava com suas longas pernas vermelhas, falando em egípcio, a língua que aprendera com a mãe. Ao redor dos campos, grandes florestas escondiam lagoas profundas. Era uma delícia passear por ali.
English translation
It was summer, and the countryside was beautiful. Golden grain, green oats, and haystacks scattered across the meadows brought color to the landscape. A stork walked along on her long red legs, speaking Egyptian, the language she had learned from her mother. Great forests around the fields hid deep ponds. It was a delight to walk there.

Perto de um rio profundo, uma antiga casa de fazenda recebia a luz do sol. Entre a casa e a água cresciam bardanas, plantas de folhas tão grandes que uma criança pequena poderia ficar em pé debaixo delas. Aquele canto parecia tão selvagem quanto o interior de uma mata fechada.
English translation
Near a deep river, an old farmhouse basked in the sunlight. Between the house and the water grew burdock plants, with leaves so large that a small child could stand underneath them. That corner seemed as wild as the depths of a dense forest.

Nesse abrigo, uma pata esperava no ninho que seus filhotes nascessem. Já estava cansada de ficar sentada: os ovos demoravam a se abrir, e quase ninguém vinha visitá-la. As outras patas preferiam nadar no rio a subir pela margem escorregadia para conversar debaixo de uma folha.
English translation
In that shelter, a duck was waiting for her ducklings to hatch. She was already tired of sitting there: the eggs were taking a long time to open, and hardly anyone came to visit her. The other ducks preferred swimming in the river to climbing the slippery bank to talk beneath a leaf.
