Illustration for the scene “A duck waiting on her nest”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

Una pata espera en su nido

A duck waiting on her nest

English translation

It was summer, and the countryside offered a beautiful sight: golden grain, green oats, and haystacks scattered across the meadows. A stork walked on her long red legs, chattering in the Egyptian language she had learned from her mother. Great forests with deep ponds stretched all around the fields.

English translation

An old farmhouse stood beside a river. Between the house and the riverbank grew burdock leaves so large that a small child could stand beneath them. There, in a corner that seemed part of a forest, a mother duck waited in her nest for her ducklings to hatch.

English translation

The wait was growing long, and she was beginning to tire. Besides, hardly anyone came to visit her: the other ducks preferred swimming to climbing the slippery bank to chat with her.
