Illustration for the scene “A duck waiting on her nest”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

Kaczka czeka na gnieździe

A duck waiting on her nest

English translation

It was a beautiful summer in the countryside. Golden grain, green oats, and haystacks in the meadows made a wonderful sight. A stork walked about on its long red legs, clattering away in Egyptian, just as its mother had taught it. Vast forests stretched around the fields and meadows, with deep ponds hidden among the trees.

English translation

An old farmhouse stood beside a deep river. Huge burdock leaves grew between the house and the water. A small child could stand upright beneath the tallest ones. It was as wild and quiet there as in the middle of a forest.

English translation

A duck was sitting on her eggs in this very shelter. She had been waiting a long time and was beginning to lose patience because the ducklings still had not come out of their shells. Few visitors came to see her. The other ducks preferred swimming in the river to climbing up the slippery bank to talk with her under the leaves.
