Scene 1 · Intermediate

A barefoot girl in the snow

English

Snow was falling heavily, and darkness was closing in on the last evening of the year. It was bitterly cold. A poor little girl wandered through the streets with nothing covering her head or feet.

English

She had been wearing slippers when she left home, though they were far too large to be much use. They had belonged to her mother. As she rushed across a street to escape two speeding carriages, both slippers came off. One disappeared, and she couldn't find it.

English

A boy grabbed the other and ran away, saying he could use it as a cradle when he had children of his own.
