Scene 1 · Beginner

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

It was the last evening of the year. It was almost dark, snow was falling, and it was very cold. A poor little girl was walking through the streets without a hat or shoes.

English translation

When she left home, she was wearing her mother’s old slippers. But they were much too big. With two carriages coming fast, she ran to cross the road and lost both slippers. She could not find one of them. A boy took the other and ran away.
