Scene 1 · Beginner

The one-legged tin soldier

English translation

A little boy received a box of twenty-five tin soldiers for his birthday. They had all been made from the same old spoon, so they were like brothers. They wore red and blue uniforms and carried their guns on their shoulders.

English translation

When the boy opened the box, he clapped his hands with joy. “Tin soldiers!” he cried, and began standing them up on the table.

English translation

They all looked alike, except for one who had only one leg. He had been made last, and there had not been enough tin left for his second leg. But he stood steadily on his one leg.
