Scene 1 · Beginner
Soldățelul de cositor cu un singur picior
The one-legged tin soldier
English translation
A little boy received a box of twenty-five tin soldiers for his birthday. They were all made from the same old metal spoon, so they were brothers. They wore red and blue uniforms and carried their rifles on their shoulders.

Când s-a ridicat capacul cutiei, băiețelul a bătut din palme și a strigat bucuros:
— Soldăței de cositor!
English translation
When the lid of the box was lifted, the little boy clapped his hands and cried happily:
“Tin soldiers!”
English translation
Those were the first words the soldiers heard. The little boy began to stand them up on the table. They all looked alike except for one, who had only one leg. He had been made last, and there wasn’t enough tin left for a second leg. Still, the little soldier stood straight and motionless on his single leg.
