O soldadinho de uma perna só
The one-legged tin soldier
English translation
A boy got twenty-five tin soldiers for his birthday. They were all brothers, because they had been made from the metal of the same old spoon. They wore red and blue uniforms, carried their weapons on their shoulders, and looked straight ahead.
English translation
When the box was opened, the boy clapped his hands with joy.
Portuguese
— Soldadinhos de estanho! — disse ele.
English translation
“Tin soldiers!” he said.
English translation
The boy stood the soldiers up on the table. They were all alike except for one: he had only one leg. That little soldier had been made last, and there had not been enough tin to make his other leg. Even so, he stood very steadily on his one leg.
