Scene 1 · Intermediate

The one-legged tin soldier

English translation

Once upon a time there were twenty-five tin soldiers. They were all brothers, since they had been made from the same old spoon, whose tin had been melted down. They wore handsome red and blue uniforms and looked straight ahead, with their guns on their shoulders.

English translation

When their box was opened, a little boy began clapping his hands with delight.

English translation

“Tin soldiers!” he cried. Those were the first words they heard in the world.

English translation

They were his birthday present, and the boy set them up on the table. They all looked exactly alike, except for one: he had only one leg. He had been made last, and there had not been enough melted tin left for his second leg. Even so, he stood firmly on his one leg and stood out among the others.
