Scene 1 · Intermediate

Mezítlábas kislány a hóban

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

It was New Year’s Eve, the last evening of the year. It was terribly cold, snow was falling heavily, and it was almost dark. A poor little girl, bareheaded and barefoot, walked the streets in the cold and dark.

English translation

When she had left home, she was still wearing slippers, but they hardly helped her. They belonged to her mother, so they were much too big for her feet. As she ran across the road to get away from two carriages approaching quickly, she lost them both. She looked for one in vain, while a boy picked up the other and ran off with it. He said it would make a good cradle when he had children of his own someday.
