Scene 1 · Intermediate

En barføtt jente i snøen

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

Snow was falling thickly, and on the last evening of the year it was already almost dark. A poor little girl wandered through the streets in the biting cold, barefoot and with nothing on her head. She had been wearing slippers when she left home, but they were much too big. They had belonged to her mother.

Norwegian

To vogner hadde kommet i full fart, og da jenta løp over gaten for å komme unna dem, mistet hun begge tøflene.

English translation

Two carriages had come along at full speed, and when the girl ran across the street to get out of their way, she lost both slippers. One slipper she never found again. A boy snatched up the other. He ran off with it and said he could use it as a cradle when he had children of his own.
