Scene 1 · Intermediate

Una niña descalza en la nieve

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

On the last afternoon of the year, it was terribly cold. Snow was falling heavily, and it was almost dark. A poor little girl wandered through the streets, bareheaded and barefoot.

English translation

She had left home wearing a pair of slippers that had belonged to her mother, but they were much too big for her and hardly any use. As she crossed the street, she had to run to dodge two carriages speeding past, and she lost them. One disappeared, and she couldn't find it.

English translation

A boy took the other one and ran off, saying it would make a cradle for him when he had children.
