Scene 1 · Intermediate

En barfodet pige i sneen

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

On the last evening of the year, the snow fell thickly. It was bitterly cold, and darkness was closing in. A little girl went from street to street, bareheaded and barefoot. She had been wearing slippers when she left home, but they had belonged to her mother and were much too big.

Danish

Hun havde mistet begge tøfler, da hun skyndte sig over gaden for at komme af vejen for to vogne, der kom i fuld fart.

English translation

She had lost both slippers when she hurried across the street to get out of the way of two carriages coming at full speed. She couldn’t find one of them again. A boy snatched the other and ran off with it. He said he could use it as a cradle when he had children of his own.
