Scene 1 · Intermediate

Une fillette pieds nus dans la neige

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

On the last evening of the year, snow fell in large flakes through the darkness and terrible cold. A poor little girl wandered the streets, bareheaded and barefoot. Yet she had left home wearing slippers, but they were far too big: they had belonged to her mother.

English translation

She had lost them while running to escape two cars speeding past. She couldn’t find the first one; as for the other, a boy had snatched it and run off, claiming he would make it into a cradle for his future children.
