Illustration for the scene “A barefoot girl in the snow”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

O fetiță desculță în zăpadă

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

It was the last evening of the year. Darkness was falling, snow was coming down heavily, and the cold was bitter. A poor little girl wandered through the streets, bareheaded and barefoot.

English translation

When she left home, she had a pair of slippers, but they were so large that she could barely keep them on. They had belonged to her mother. She lost them while running across the street, trying to get out of the way of two carriages speeding by. One of the slippers was never found.

English translation

A boy snatched up the other one and ran off with it, saying that when he had children, he could use it as a cradle.
