Illustration for the scene “A barefoot girl in the snow”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

It was the last evening of the year. Snow fell in thick flakes, it was growing dark, and it was terribly cold. A poor little girl wandered through the streets, with nothing on her head and bare feet. When she left home, she was still wearing slippers.

English translation

They were much too big for her, because they had belonged to her mother. So they were not much use to her.

English translation

While crossing the street, she had lost her slippers. She had had to run to dodge two carriages coming toward her at great speed. Afterward, she couldn't find one slipper anywhere. A boy had taken the other.

English translation

He had run off with it, saying he could use the slipper as a cradle when he had children of his own.
