Scene 1 · Intermediate

En barfota flicka i snön

A barefoot girl in the snow

English translation

Snow was falling heavily on the last evening of the year. It was bitterly cold and almost dark. A little girl walked along the streets, bareheaded and barefoot. She had been wearing her mother’s slippers when she left home, but they were much too big.

English translation

She lost both of them as she ran across the street to get out of the way of two carriages coming at full speed.

English translation

She could not find one of the slippers. A boy took the other and ran away with it. He said it was so big that he could use it as a cradle when he had children of his own.
