Era o último entardecer do ano. Fazia um frio terrível, a neve caía com força e a escuridão já tomava conta das ruas. Uma pobre menina caminhava por elas, sem nada para cobrir a cabeça e com os pés descalços.
It was the last evening of the year. It was terribly cold, the snow was falling heavily, and darkness was already taking over the streets. A poor girl walked through them with nothing to cover her head and her feet bare.
Quando saíra de casa, estava de chinelos, mas eles quase não ajudavam: eram enormes, pois tinham pertencido à sua mãe. Ao atravessar a rua, ela precisou correr para escapar de duas carruagens que vinham em alta velocidade e acabou perdendo os dois. Não conseguiu encontrar um deles.
When she had left home, she was wearing slippers, but they hardly helped: they were enormous because they had belonged to her mother. As she crossed the street, she had to run to escape two carriages racing toward her, and she ended up losing both slippers. She couldn’t find one of them.
O outro foi levado por um menino, que fugiu dizendo que usaria o chinelo como berço quando tivesse seus próprios filhos.
The other was taken by a boy, who ran off, saying he would use the slipper as a cradle when he had children of his own.
