Illustration for the scene “The Sea King's castle”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

Il castello del Re del Mare

The Sea King's castle

English translation

Far away, in the middle of the ocean, the water is as blue as a flower and as clear as crystal. The sea is so deep that even many bell towers stacked one on top of another would not reach from the bottom to the surface. Down there live the Sea King and his subjects.

English translation

There is more than sand on the ocean floor. Plants and flowers of unusual shapes grow there, their leaves and stems so flexible that they move with the slightest current. Big and small fish swim among the branches, just as birds fly among trees on land.

English translation

The Sea King's castle stands in the deepest place. Its walls are made of coral, and it has tall windows of transparent amber. The roof is made of shells that open and close as the water passes by. Inside each one shines a pearl so beautiful it could adorn a queen's crown.
