Weit draußen im Ozean ist das Wasser blau wie eine Kornblume und klar wie Kristall. Dort ist es so tief, dass selbst viele aufeinandergestellte Kirchtürme nicht vom Meeresboden bis zur Oberfläche reichen würden. In dieser Tiefe leben der Meerkönig und sein Volk.
English translation
Far out in the ocean, the water is blue as a cornflower and clear as crystal. It is so deep there that even many church towers stacked on top of one another would not reach from the sea floor to the surface. The Sea King and his people live in these depths.
German
Ihr Zuhause besteht keineswegs nur aus kahlem Sand. Überall wachsen ungewöhnliche Blumen und Pflanzen mit so biegsamen Blättern und Stängeln, dass schon eine leichte Bewegung des Wassers sie zum Schwanken bringt. Fische gleiten zwischen ihren Zweigen hindurch, ähnlich wie Vögel durch die Bäume fliegen.
English translation
Their home is by no means just bare sand. Unusual flowers and plants grow everywhere, with leaves and stems so flexible that even a slight movement of the water makes them sway. Fish glide between their branches, much as birds fly through trees.

An der tiefsten Stelle steht das Schloss des Meerkönigs. Seine Mauern sind aus Korallen, die hohen, spitz zulaufenden Fenster aus reinem Bernstein. Auf dem Dach liegen Muscheln, die sich in der Strömung öffnen und schließen. Jede enthält eine schimmernde Perle, kostbar genug für die Krone einer Königin.
English translation
At the deepest point stands the Sea King’s castle. Its walls are made of coral, and its tall, pointed windows of pure amber. Shells lie on the roof, opening and closing in the current. Each one holds a shimmering pearl, precious enough for a queen’s crown.
