Messze kinn az óceánon a víz olyan kék, mint a búzavirág, és olyan tiszta, mint a kristály. Ott olyan mély a tenger, hogy a leghosszabb kötél sem érné el a fenekét. Sok egymásra állított templomtorony sem érne fel onnan a felszínig. Ebben a mélységben élt a tengerkirály az alattvalóival.
English translation
Far out in the ocean, the water was as blue as a cornflower and as clear as crystal. The sea was so deep there that even the longest rope could not reach the bottom. A stack of church towers piled one on top of another would not reach the surface, either. In these depths lived the Sea King and his subjects.

A tenger fenekét nem csupasz homok borította. Különös virágok és növények nőttek mindenfelé, hajlékony száruk és levelük a víz legkisebb mozdulatára is megremegett. Közöttük úgy siklottak a halak, ahogy a szárazföldön a madarak repülnek a fák ágai között.
English translation
The seabed was not covered with bare sand. Strange flowers and plants grew everywhere, their flexible stems and leaves trembling at the slightest movement of the water. Fish glided among them as birds fly between the branches of trees on land.

A legmélyebb helyen állt a tengerkirály palotája. Korallfalait magas, keskeny borostyánablakok díszítették. A tető kagylói kinyíltak és becsukódtak, ahogy átáramlott rajtuk a víz. Mindegyikben egy ragyogó gyöngy pihent, amely egy királyné koronájában is szépen mutatott volna.
English translation
The Sea King’s palace stood in the deepest place. Its coral walls were decorated with tall, narrow amber windows. The shells on the roof opened and closed as water flowed through them. In each one rested a shining pearl that would have looked lovely in a queen’s crown.
