Illustration for the scene “The Sea King's castle”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

El castillo del rey del Mar

The Sea King's castle

English translation

Far out at sea, the water was a deep blue and as clear as glass. It was so deep there that many bell towers stacked one on top of another would not reach from the bottom to the surface. The Sea King and his subjects lived in those depths.

English translation

Their world was not a bare stretch of sand. Strange flowers and plants grew there, with stems so flexible that they swayed at the slightest movement of the water. Fish swam among their branches like birds among trees. At the deepest point stood the king’s castle, with coral walls and tall windows of clear amber.

English translation

The roof was covered with shells that opened and closed as the water passed. Inside each one gleamed a pearl fit for a queen’s crown.
