Muito longe, em pleno oceano, a água era azul como uma flor e transparente como cristal. Ali o mar era tão profundo que várias torres de igreja, colocadas umas sobre as outras, não chegariam à superfície. Era naquele lugar que viviam o Rei do Mar e seu povo.
English translation
Far away, in the middle of the ocean, the water was as blue as a flower and as clear as crystal. The sea there was so deep that even several church towers stacked one on top of another would not reach the surface. That was where the Sea King and his people lived.

O fundo não era feito apenas de areia vazia. Flores e plantas extraordinárias cresciam por toda parte, com folhas e caules tão flexíveis que se moviam ao menor movimento da água. Entre os ramos, peixes grandes e pequenos nadavam como pássaros entre as árvores.
English translation
The ocean floor was not just empty sand. Extraordinary flowers and plants grew everywhere, with leaves and stems so flexible that they moved with the slightest movement of the water. Big and small fish swam among the branches like birds among the trees.

Na parte mais profunda ficava o castelo do Rei do Mar. As paredes eram de coral, e as janelas altas, de âmbar transparente. No telhado, conchas se abriam e se fechavam com a passagem da água. Dentro de cada uma brilhava uma pérola digna da coroa de uma rainha.
English translation
The Sea King’s castle stood in the deepest part of the ocean. Its walls were made of coral, and its tall windows were made of clear amber. On the roof, shells opened and closed as the water flowed past. Inside each one shone a pearl fit for a queen’s crown.
