Jacob, who was also called Israel, lived in Canaan, where his father had lived before him. This is the story of his family.
When Joseph was seventeen, he tended the livestock with his brothers, including the sons of Jacob’s wives Bilhah and Zilpah. He told his father about the bad things his brothers did. Jacob loved Joseph more than his other children, because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So he made Joseph a multicolored robe.
The brothers could easily see who their father’s favorite was. They hated Joseph so much that they could not say a kind word to him.
