Jacob, who was also called Israel, lived in Canaan, where his father had lived before him. This is where the story of his family begins.
Sein Sohn Josef war siebzehn Jahre alt. Gemeinsam mit seinen Brüdern hütete er die Herde, auch mit den Söhnen von Bilha und Silpa, den Frauen seines Vaters. Wenn Josef Schlechtes über seine Brüder zu berichten hatte, erzählte er es dem Vater.
His son Joseph was seventeen years old. He tended the flock with his brothers, including the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives. Whenever Joseph had something bad to report about his brothers, he told his father.
Israel liebte Josef mehr als seine anderen Kinder, weil Josef ihm noch im Alter geboren worden war. Er ließ ihm ein buntes Gewand machen. Den Brüdern entging diese Bevorzugung nicht. Sie hassten Josef so sehr, dass sie kein freundliches Wort mit ihm reden konnten.
Israel loved Joseph more than his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. He had a colorful robe made for him. This favoritism did not escape his brothers’ notice. They hated Joseph so much that they could not speak a kind word to him.
