Scene 1 · Intermediate
Den brogede kjortel
The coat of many colors
English translation
Jacob, who was also called Israel, lived in Canaan, where his father had lived before him. His son Joseph was seventeen and tended the sheep with his brothers, including the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, two of Jacob’s wives. Joseph told their father something bad about his brothers.
English translation
Jacob loved Joseph more than his other children because Joseph was born to him in his old age. He made him a colorful robe. The brothers could see who their father’s favorite was, and they came to hate Joseph so much that they could not speak kindly to him.
